How Do You Lift Timber Frame Barns? - Barn Preservation and Restoration
| How Do You Lift Timber Frame Barns? I have a 6 bay timber frame post and beam barn held together by wood dowels. Some of the vertical support posts are setting on concrete foundations and others are floating on large field stones. To re-level the barn I wish to raise the sagging posts. How does one do this? I read where someone sandwiched the post with 2 by 10 planks perpendicular to the main post and lagged them into the main post. 4 - 2 by 10 planks 6 feet long connected to the main post on the corners. Then they lifted evenly at the four points by placing a jack below each paired end of the 2by10's. Is the picture I presented clear? Then one can work underneath the post to place concrete and shore up the foundation. Does this sound feasible or is there an easier method? How would you do it? This barn is not a basement barn. It has wood to the ground and is a gable roof structure. Thanks for any help Michael |
