Video: Barn Stories: Hayden family farm - Old Barn Stories
Video: Barn Stories: Hayden family farm Folklorists study the informal ways we learn, and our everyday expressions of what we find beautiful and important in life -- from making a quilt to celebrate a special occasion, to creating art from tools and objects we find around us, to planting corn in straight, perfect rows. In our stories, we also choose whats most important to us. And our stories happen in places important to us: our living rooms and kitchens, our churches and taverns, our workshops and barns. -- Ruth Olson, Associate Director, Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures. One of four parts.
It's important that folklore is passed down from generation to generation. Before civilised man invented writing tools, and still today in some third world countries where access to pen and paper is impossible, stories are relayed from generation to generation to ensure that they are preserved for posterity. These stories usually also have a message to them.
Our folks were just creative enough to make use of the available materials to create a new thing. That made them survive and it was even handed down from one generation to another. Old barns have been usable for many people even until at present time. Recycling some old materials there are really good for someone who can make something worthwhile. I also live in the rural and I enjoy raising animal in the barn.
Folklore is as traditional as family dinners, weddings, and religion. I do hope that folklore will continue to be a part of my family's life even though the world around us is becoming more and more modern. The folklore itself may reflect some of modern living, but just the ritual of telling old stories which are passed on from generation to generation is what I hope will continue for years to come.
