Questions: How to fix a big rat problem?

Thank author of this post/commentI have an older barn that is absolutely INFESTED with rats. The top portion is used for storing shell corn and oats and the bottom is for firewood and machinery. I know, putting grain in there wasn't the best idea, but I have no where else to put it. How do I get rid of them? It has gotten so bad that they are starting to come into other buildings, and neither my dogs nor my cat put any sort of dent in the onslaught. Help?

That is indeed a big problem especially that your farm is your source of livelihood. If I were in your position I would usually go with the first affordable option, controlling the pest myself. Set up traps or buy rat killers, though it is messy to clean up after, it can provide a first aid solution to the matter.

Given that the infestation is out of one's personal control, the best way is to hire professional help to address the issue. One's last resort would be to afford or build a completely pest-proof granary for your crops, that is if you have the budget to make one.

Sometimes you also have to maintain the cleanliness of a place where you store your crops. I would agree that it is nice to store some crops in an old barn but of course you have to make sure that there will be no holes which will allow some pest and rats to enter inside the barn. You might as well use a pesticide to totally get rid of them.

Whew! I know this is really disgusting! If I were in your place, I would probably hire someone from the pest control company who could help me get rid of those. This is very gross. Yes, I agree with Marynor. You also have to maintain the cleanliness of the place to avoid being infested again.

Thank you so much and have a great day to all!

That is indeed a big problem to face. I think you need to consult experts about pest control to avoid this such problem. You need to keep your place clean, dry and you need to check your barn everyday if there are holes and other pest to make your crops save.

But for now, you need to hire professional pest controller to get rid of this. Have a great day!

Thanks for sharing in here guys. I also happen to have the same problem with pests like that. I find it hard to get rid of rats and I do not know what to do. I have tried different methods that I know and learned online but they did not work. The pests just keep on coming back. But still checking on some good tips would be best for me. Thanks.
