Video: Scenes from a village 14 - Barns.wmv - Uses for Old Barns
| Video: Scenes from a village 14 - Barns.wmv Some of the oldest and most elegant structures in the village are the barns, though this might not be immediately apparent. The beauty of these constructions is somewhat hidden by the weather boards that allow air to circulate inside these solid oak constructions. In those households that still keep a cow the barn remains pretty much as it was originally intended, to store hay for feed and bedding. But it is a sign of the changing times when families no longer find that keeping a cow is economically viable and alternative uses for barns need be found. At our end of the village the lowing of a cow at milking time can be heard still at Mika's house, at Bara's and on the hill at Tona's. But at our house the cow has long gone and the barn has, over the past three years, been gradually transformed into a painting studio and terrace. At the home of the Salad Woman changes to her barn are afoot. But for our new neighbours, Mladen and Tamara, the process of conversion is only just beginning. |
| There are a lot of old barns in the countryside that were not maintained well. But if they only know how to make use of these old materials taken from an old barn, they can still save them for future use. In my case, I try to take woods and other stuff that can still be used for making furniture. I am planning to build a new barn and some woods are still usable for it. |
