| Yahoo! Answers: Horse leans into pressure on cross ties? I have a 5 year old Appendix that I've had for almost a year now. I used to tack him up and groom him either in his stall, or tied to the trailer because I trailer him out alot in the summer. When I started cross tieing him, I notice he liked to move around a bit and would always start to back up when I would start grooming his neck area (he also likes to chew on the cross ties sometimes). At first I thought he was just being nosy and wanted to see what I had in my hands, but he continued to back up every time I went to go groom his neck area (he doesn't move when I'm grooming his back end). So I started cross tieing him everytime I was at the barn to try and get him out of this habit, and everytime he went to back up, I would pull him forward, make him stand, and try again. 9 times out of 10 he would back up again, so I would keep doing it over and over again untill our session was done. I was at the farm today doing the same thing, and at one point I just stood there when he started backing up and let him do it. Lo and behold, he stood like an angel while I finished grooming him as long as he was "leaning backwards" into the pressure of the cross ties. Someone told me a long time ago that some horses are more comfortable this way, but I'm not really sure if it's a good habit for him to have? I understand if he's standing in that position and spooks, it could be a bit more dangerous than if he was standing "normally" in the cross ties. Does anyone know of any way to rid him of this? Or are some horses just more comfortable this way?? |
